Use this hub to define what the drawing controls, where general standards apply, and which characteristics need explicit inspection attention.
General tolerance notes, GD&T references, and inspection expectations only work when their boundaries are clear. The drawing should identify the controlling revision, the standard framework being used, and the special characteristics that cannot be left to general notes or shop interpretation.
Make the drawing revision the controlling source
The RFQ package should identify the released drawing revision, any related models, and any companion specifications that affect acceptance. When model and drawing are both issued, the package should clarify which source controls dimensions, notes, and unresolved conflicts.
- Provide the active revision and mark superseded files clearly.
- List customer or internal specifications that add acceptance requirements beyond the drawing face.
- State whether supplier questions must be resolved by marked-up drawing feedback before order release.
Use general standards only for the features they are meant to cover
General tolerances and general GD&T practices are useful for non-critical features, but they do not replace explicit control of interfaces, fits, datums, or inspection-critical surfaces. If a feature drives assembly or function, call it out directly instead of relying on a broad note.
- Identify fit, seal, alignment, and datum features with explicit requirements.
- Do not assume a general note will answer edge break, burr, or surface condition questions on critical faces.
- Separate reference dimensions from acceptance dimensions so the inspection plan follows the same logic as the drawing.
Define the inspection boundary, not just the nominal geometry
Inspection planning depends on which features must be reported, how nonconforming conditions are escalated, and whether first-article style evidence, in-process checks, or shipment-level records are expected. Those expectations should be requested explicitly rather than inferred from the tolerance block alone.
- List critical characteristics that require reportable results.
- Clarify whether inspection records are needed for all dimensions, selected features, or first-piece approval only.
- Note any customer-supplied gauges, mating parts, or functional checks that affect acceptance.
Useful RFQ inputs for tolerance review
Provide the drawing, model if applicable, the standard references already approved by your team, and a short list of the dimensions or relationships that matter most to function. That lets the reviewer identify ambiguity without promising unsupported tolerances or metrology capability.
