Materials for CNC machining RFQs

Use this hub to frame alloy, temper, traceability, and substitution questions before you request a machining quote.

Material callouts affect cost, availability, machining risk, inspection planning, and downstream finishing. A useful RFQ names the material family, the grade or trade designation when known, the condition or temper when relevant, and any documentation that must follow the shipment.

Start with the material family, then narrow the grade

If the exact grade is not fixed, state the family first so the review can confirm process fit. Aluminum, stainless steel, tool steel, copper alloys, engineering plastics, and hardened mold materials all drive different tooling, holding, and inspection decisions.

  • List the drawing callout exactly when the grade is already controlled.
  • If the grade is still open, identify the intended function such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, or dimensional stability.
  • Flag whether substitute grades require customer approval before quoting or production.

Include the condition that changes machining behavior

Tempers, heat-treated conditions, and supplied stock form can matter as much as the base alloy. A review can only compare risk correctly when the RFQ states whether the part is expected to be machined from plate, bar, pre-hard block, annealed stock, or material that will be treated after machining.

  • Call out tempers or conditions when they are part of the design intent.
  • Note whether heat treatment, stress relief, or aging is expected before or after machining.
  • Identify if flatness, distortion control, or hardness verification will be reviewed after secondary processing.

State the documentation boundary early

Not every project needs the same paperwork. If a heat lot record, mill test report, certificate of conformance, or internal traceability link is required, include that requirement in the RFQ instead of assuming it is standard for every order.

  • Specify which documents must ship with the parts or be approved before shipment.
  • Clarify whether traceability is required at batch level, raw material level, or by serialized component.
  • Separate regulatory or customer-specific requirements from general commercial expectations.

Useful RFQ inputs when the material is still being selected

When engineering is comparing options, the most useful inputs are the service environment, mating surfaces, mass targets, electrical or thermal needs, and which features are most sensitive to movement during machining or finishing. That gives the reviewer enough context to ask focused questions without implying unsupported performance claims.

Should an RFQ include both a trade name and a standard grade?

Yes, when both matter. The trade name helps identify the expected supply chain reference, while the standard grade helps avoid ambiguity across regions or mills.

Can we request a quote before the final alloy is approved?

Yes, if the RFQ clearly says the material is provisional. Include the preferred family, the alternatives under consideration, and which assumptions must be confirmed before order release.

When should traceability be called out explicitly?

Call it out whenever material identity, lot linkage, or supporting paperwork is part of the customer requirement. It should not be left as an unstated expectation.
